Now What? The Journey After an Autism Diagnosis
In the world of autism, we often talk about what therapies, interventions, or supports are needed. We talk about what school placement looks like. We talk about behavior and we talk about communication.
Why don’t we talk more about the period immediately following a diagnosis?
The moment a parent receives an autism diagnosis for their child is life changing. It marks the beginning of a journey filled with new routines, potential challenges, and uncertainties. Some parents may feel an overwhelming sense of loneliness and confusion about what lies ahead. Some parents feel grief - not for autism, but of an easy life they wanted for their child - free of complicated IEP meetings or difficulties communicating.
But, you know what? This time also marks incredibly profound moments of growth, resilience, and love. You will witness your child conquer milestones and feel more pride than you ever thought you could. And it is a feeling that only other autism parents know.
This isn’t a blog post for us to say “aw, we know how you feel!” - because we don’t. Only YOU know what that journey is like, and that is what makes it special. It’s your journey, not anyone else’s.
So…why are we here?
As educators and professionals, what we can offer you is information. Not only that, but solace and guidance as you navigate the path following your child's diagnosis. Every family's journey is unique, and while there is no one-size-fits-all approach, there are certain best practices and insights that can help illuminate the way forward.
Let’s get into it!
Embracing the Journey
It's essential to acknowledge and honor all of the emotions you may be feeling right now or felt in that moment. The news of your child's diagnosis can stir up a range of feelings – grief for the expectations you had, fear of the unknown, guilt, and even relief that there's finally an explanation for your concerns. Whatever you're experiencing, it's valid.
Allow yourself the space to grieve. It's okay to mourn the dreams you had envisioned for your child and to feel the weight of uncertainty about the future. Surround yourself with a support system of understanding friends, family, or support groups who can offer a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on during this time.
Understanding Autism
Knowledge is power, and learning about autism can be incredibly empowering as you embark on this journey. Take the time to familiarize yourself with common jargon, such as sensory processing issues, stimming, ABA therapy, speech and occupational therapy, IEPs, and so on. Understanding these terms can help you communicate more effectively with professionals and advocate for your child's needs. You have the power to choose what supports are right for you and your child. You also have the power to ask questions or stop certain supports at any time.
Remember that autism is a spectrum, and each individual with autism is unique. Your child's strengths, challenges, and preferences will shape the interventions and strategies that work best for them. Embrace their uniqueness and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small they may seem to others. You know that every achievement deserves a celebration.
Building Your Support Network
You are not alone on this journey. Reach out to other parents of children with autism who can offer guidance, empathy, and practical advice based on their own experiences. Online forums, support groups, and local autism organizations can be invaluable resources for connecting with other families and accessing information about available services and therapies in your area.
(Psst…Learning to Play is working on some of these in the very near future 😉)
Additionally, don't hesitate to lean on professionals such as teachers, speech and occupational therapists, and developmental pediatricians who specialize in autism. These experts can provide personalized support and guidance tailored to your child's specific needs.
Making Informed Decisions: Finding What Works for Your Child
As you navigate all the options and therapies available for children with autism, remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach! What works for one child may not necessarily work for another. Take the time to research and explore different interventions, therapies, and educational programs, and trust your instincts as a parent to determine what feels right for your child.
Some common therapies and interventions for children with autism include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech therapy, occupational therapy, sensory integration therapy, social skills training, and developmental interventions. Work closely with your child's healthcare team to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses their unique strengths and challenges.

Don’t Let Anyone Take Away Your Spark
Above all, remember that your child is still your wonderful, beautiful child. They are the same child they were before the diagnosis. They will continue to be the same child moving forward. They will still make you laugh, want cookies (but, like, a very brand of cookies) for breakfast after you’ve told them no, or want to watch Bluey for the 10 millionth time.
While the road ahead may be challenging at times, remember it's also filled with SO much joy, growth, and connection. Celebrate ALL the victories, no matter how insignificant they may seem to others.

Every milestone reached, every obstacle overcome is a testament to your child's strength and your unwavering love and dedication as a parent.
Take each day as it comes, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You are not expected to have all the answers or to navigate this journey alone. Reach out to your support network and trust in your ability to advocate for your child's needs.
Remember that you are not defined by your child's diagnosis. Your family's journey with autism is just one chapter in the beautiful story of your lives together. Embrace the highs and lows, cherish the moments of connection and growth, and know that you are surrounded by a community of love, support, and understanding.
